Baystate Health, a premier, integrated, academic health system in western Massachusetts seeks an innovative and experienced physician leader to serve as its next Chief Academic Officer (CAO) and Regional Executive Dean for the UMass Chan Medical School.


Combined with an excellent reputation, Baystate Health, a not-for-profit healthcare organization, is one of the largest health systems in New England; serving more than 800,000 people with nearly 13,000 employees and generating gross revenues of over $3 billion. Anchored by Baystate Medical Center, a 730-bed academic facility, the system is comprised of five hospitals, four community health centers, Baystate Medical Practices (the employed academic medical group), more than 90 ambulatory centers, and Health New England (health plan). Baystate Health serves as the regional medical campus of the UMass Chan School of Medicine, educating over 100 medical students and training 380 residents and fellows annually.


The CAO, who also serves as the Designated Institutional Officer (DIO) leads and oversees all aspects of the academic mission at Baystate Health. This includes oversight of all educational programs, research programs, the institutional review board, academic affiliation agreements, academic promotion, grants management, and continuing medical education. This executive sets the strategic academic vision for Baystate Health in partnership with physician and administrative leadership across the enterprise and is responsible for insuring compliance with regulations and regulatory bodies in all aspects of the academic mission.


The incoming CAO will build upon an innovative and novel undergraduate medical education curriculum, propel graduate medical programs of excellence, grow inter-disciplinary educational and clinical research, and enhance faculty development programs while providing strategic leadership and oversight of Baystate's academic enterprise. The CAO will continue to recruit a diverse class (and faculty) and advance the diversity, equity, and inclusion principles across the continuum of medical education. Dually reporting to the Chief Physician Executive of Baystate Health, Andrew (Andy) Artenstein, M.D. and the Dean of UMass Chan School of Medicine, Terence (Terry) Flotte, M.D., the CAO will serve as part of the senior leadership team as head of the academic pillar for the health system.


The successful candidate will be an M.D., M.D./Ph.D. or D.O. with significant experience in academic medicine, including oversight of medical education programs with a demonstrated track record of championing excellence, leading change, and fostering engagement. In addition, this leader will possess exceptional relational and team-building skills to work across disciplines, departments, and institutions. Superb communication skills, financial acumen, and a clear vision for advancing the academic mission amid a changing healthcare and education landscape are essential for the next CAO. Candidates should possess a record of progressive leadership in academic medicine, and a national reputation or significant involvement within the medical education community.
